Collegiate Moves to New Home

On January 12, Collegiate opened in its new building at 301 Freedom Place South. While teachers have been back since January 8 and students attended an orientation on January 11, Friday, January 12 was the first full day of classes. Students arrived to find Headmaster Levison and the division heads to welcome them in the lobby. Middle Schoolers headed up to their new home on the eighth and ninth floors, while Lower Schoolers were guided up the stairs to the second and third floors by Lower School Head Ms. Tashlik and their teachers. Some Upper School students went straight to the first floor dining room to have breakfast, while others ventured to the library on the fifth floor or the Upper School on the fifth and sixth floors. A sense of excitement filled the building, which began construction in September, 2015.

Collegiate’s new home offers 180,000 square feet of space, a 32% increase from the School’s former building. Athletics facilities include a high-school regulation sized gym and an additional gym that can accommodate regulation wrestling competitions, half-court basketball, and features a retractable batting cage. The performing arts benefit from a 307-seat auditorium and a black box theater. Outdoor spaces feature a play roof and a 5,000-square-foot courtyard. Sciences for all divisions are located on the seventh floor, allowing collaboration across divisions. Visual arts and music for all three divisions occupy the fourth floor, complete with music practice spaces, art studios, and a digital photo lab.
